The impact of chronic stress on the quality of strategic decisions made by company founders

Abstract

Chronic stress can fundamentally reshape the context in which company founders make strategic decisions, even when their work pace and sense of control appear stable. This study connects neurocognitive processes to two persistent bottlenecks faced by founders: postponed expansion and hesitancy to delegate authority. The review synthesizes findings from ten peer-reviewed articles published between 2022 and 2026, spanning topics such as stress neurobiology, risk-taking behavior, entrepreneurial burnout, recovery, leadership dynamics, work-life balance, and delegation during venture growth. The evidence consistently links prolonged stress to diminished working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and emotional regulation. Notably, research on risk does not indicate a consistent directional effect—shifting focus from mere boldness or caution to the underlying quality of decision-making processes. In founder-led organizations, sustained strain may shorten planning horizons, prompt reconsideration of previously settled decisions, centralize decision approvals, and amplify reactive management of personnel. Drawing on this evidence, the author introduces the Bizhanova Strategic Decision Governance Framework, whose core tenet is the progressive transfer of decision authority as organizations expand. The framework clearly distinguishes between task delegation and the transfer of decision rights and responsibilities. Governance evolution is structured into five phases: identifying decision concentration, categorizing decision authority, incrementally transferring authority, implementing strategic oversight, and establishing governance feedback loops. Ultimately, this framework links founder well-being to the architecture of organizational decision-making, offering a systematic approach to alleviating approval bottlenecks while sustaining high-level strategic control by founders.
